On Monday, Droupadi Murmu named K Sanjay Murthy, higher education secretary, as the upcoming Comptroller and Auditor General. The incoming person will replace G C Murmu, who will retire on Thursday. The selection of the IAS officer from the 1989 batch, who will be retiring in just over a month, caught many people off guard.
“By virtue of the power vested in her by clause (1) of article 148 of the Constitution of India, the President has been pleased to appoint K Sanjay Murthy to be the Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” a notification issued by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, said.
At the moment, Murthy holds the position of Secretary in the Department of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education.
He has held the position since October 1, 2021. Paper leak incidents have tarnished his time as the Higher Education Secretary.

A Short Bio
Murthy, a graduate in engineering who speaks softly, is recognized as an innovator.
Prior to becoming CAG, Murthy was in charge of managing different educational policies. He focused on fostering growth and advancement in India’s higher education field. His background in managing and implementing policies is predicted to be advantageous in his new position.
Murthy will replace Girish Chandra Murmu, who assumed the position of CAG in August 2020. Murmu held the position of the inaugural Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir following its designation as a Union Territory. This shift signifies a furtherance of leadership in India’s auditing and accountability structure.
The Comptroller and Auditor General’s role is crucial in ensuring government finances are transparent and accountable. Murthy’s vast background in public service enables him to fulfill these duties competently.
