Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli has been admitted to a hospital in Thane, India, after doctors discovered blood clots in his brain. The 52-year-old was initially hospitalized for urinary infection and cramps.
Dr. Vivek Trivedi, treating Kambli at Akruti Hospital in Bhiwandi, confirmed the presence of brain clots to mediapersons. Kambli’s health is being closely monitored, with further examinations scheduled for Tuesday. The hospital has generously offered Kambli lifelong free treatment.
Kambli recently spoke publicly about his health challenges, including a prior hospitalization for a urinary issue. He expressed gratitude to his family and medical team for their support.
Kambli, a childhood friend and batting partner of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, recently made headlines for his heartfelt reunion with Tendulkar. The two shared warm moments as they reminisced about their historic 664-run partnership during their school days—a feat that still stands as one of the greatest in cricketing lore. Tendulkar, moved by Kambli’s openness about his financial struggles, reportedly expressed his readiness to assist his old friend in any way possible.
A Glorious Start
Kambli burst onto the international cricket scene in 1993, scoring back-to-back double centuries in Test matches against England and Zimbabwe. With an average over 50 in his first 10 Tests, he was hailed as a prodigy destined for greatness. His wristy elegance, coupled with an aggressive approach, made him a fan favorite during a time when Indian cricket was dominated by conservative batting styles.
A Career Cut Short
However, Kambli’s career trajectory did not follow the expected upward curve. Injuries, form slumps, and controversies, including a strained relationship with the cricket establishment, led to his premature exit from international cricket. Despite his early successes, he played only 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India, a number that many believe does not do justice to his immense talent.
Kambli’s deteriorating health condition—caused mainly by his alcoholism– recently prompted offers of support from cricketing stalwarts like Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar. Kapil Dev, India’s first World Cup-winning captain, praised Kambli’s contribution to Indian cricket and expressed his willingness to provide any assistance needed for his recovery. Gavaskar, too, extended his support, emphasizing the importance of rallying around players who have brought glory to the nation.
