May 10, 2026: Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and immediately moved to implement key election promises, signalling an aggressive start for the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government.
Soon after being sworn in at a grand ceremony at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Vijay signed a series of major orders focused on welfare delivery, law and order, and women’s safety — issues that formed the core of TVK’s election campaign.
Among the first announcements was a scheme providing 200 units of free electricity per household every month, a move expected to benefit millions of families grappling with rising living costs and power bills across the state.
The new Chief Minister also approved the creation of a Special Anti-Drug Task Force to tackle the growing narcotics menace in Tamil Nadu. The dedicated unit will reportedly operate across all districts with a focus on enforcement, prevention, intelligence gathering, and rehabilitation initiatives.

In another major step, Vijay announced the formation of a Special Women Protection Force backed by separate legislation aimed at strengthening women’s safety and security. Officials said the force would focus on rapid response mechanisms, crime prevention, and support systems for women across the state.
The measures were among Vijay’s most prominent campaign pledges, alongside promises such as free bus travel for women, monthly financial assistance schemes, expanded healthcare coverage, education support, and farmer welfare initiatives.
TVK had repeatedly projected these welfare and governance promises as part of its “people-first” political model during the election campaign.

Vijay’s swearing-in marked a historic turning point in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in its very first Assembly election. The party emerged as the single-largest formation with 108 seats and later secured post-poll support from parties including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Congress, and Left parties to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
Addressing supporters shortly after the ceremony, Vijay pledged a corruption-free administration focused on social justice, welfare delivery, youth empowerment, and transparent governance.
The swearing-in ceremony drew massive crowds of supporters, turning large parts of Chennai into a sea of TVK’s yellow-and-maroon party colours. Tight security arrangements were put in place around the venue amid huge celebrations by party workers and Vijay fans.
Political observers view the immediate rollout of welfare and security measures as a strategic attempt by the new government to quickly establish administrative credibility and reinforce the campaign narrative that powered TVK’s dramatic rise.
More announcements, including Cabinet portfolio allocations and timelines for implementing major manifesto promises, are expected in the coming days as the Vijay-led government formally begins its tenure.
