Sudden braking triggered collision
The accident occurred around 10.15 am on Monday as Rahul Gandhi was travelling to Sultanpur.
According to a police officer quoted by PTI, a private vehicle at the front of the convoy, belonging to local Congress leaders, suddenly applied the brakes for an unspecified reason. Vehicles travelling behind it then collided with one another.
Police said the vehicles involved in the pile-up had joined the convoy midway and were carrying passengers, including Congress workers from neighbouring Amethi district.
The SIT will reconstruct the sequence of events, examine why the vehicle braked suddenly and determine whether any lapses in escort management, vehicle coordination or traffic control contributed to the collision.
Rahul Gandhi safe
Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, was not involved in the collision and remained safe, police said. The incident was described as minor, with no major injuries reported.
Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi also confirmed that Gandhi was safe and that his vehicle was not among those involved.
“Rahul ji is completely safe. It was a minor brush as his motorcade moved along the expressway,” Awasthi said.
The convoy resumed its journey shortly after the accident and reached the Sultanpur court at around 11.15 am, accompanied by police personnel.
The SIT’s findings are expected to establish how the collision occurred and whether changes are needed in the management of convoys and accompanying vehicles on expressways.
