December 20, 2025 – Three minor children were injured on Saturday afternoon when an unexploded bomb detonated in Molnoi Village, located along Pallel Road in Tengnoupal District, amid lingering remnants from past ethnic violence in the region. The injured children, all residents of the Kuki-dominated Molnoi Village, have been identified as:
- Ngamgunmang Haokip, aged 7
- Hemgousang Baite, aged 10
- Jamgunsei Baite, aged 5
According to local reports, the children were playing when they accidentally struck the object—believed to be a mortar bomb or similar ordnance—with a stone, causing it to explode around 1:00 PM. Initial accounts describe the incident as purely accidental, with the device likely a remnant from ethnic clashes in the area on September 8, 2023, involving armed groups.
The children were immediately evacuated and rushed to the 26 Sector Assam Rifles Hospital in Pallel for emergency treatment. Sources indicate that one child is in critical condition, while the others are stable but receiving ongoing care. Further updates on their medical status are awaited.
In a statement, the Molnoi Area Welfare Council (MAWC) expressed deep concern over the “unfortunate and accidental” incident, emphasizing that it was not linked to any deliberate or suspicious activity. The council highlighted the persistent danger of unexploded ordnance in conflict-affected zones, calling it a grave threat to civilians, especially children.
MAWC extended sincere gratitude to the 26th Sector Assam Rifles for their rapid response, first aid, and coordination in providing timely medical assistance, which helped stabilize the situation
.The incident underscores the ongoing risks from unexploded remnants in Manipur, where ethnic tensions between communities have led to sporadic violence since 2023. Authorities have been urged to prioritize systematic surveys and clearance operations to prevent future tragedies.Officials have assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, reiterating that the explosion was an unintended accident. Security forces have cordoned off the area for further investigation.
