On Wednesday (local time), US President Donald Trump warned that he would impose additional tariffs on the European Union and Canada if they collaborated “to inflict economic damage” on the United States.
Trump’s reciprocal tariffs on nations worldwide are scheduled to take effect beginning April 2.
“If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large scale Tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both in order to protect the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump’s recent warning follows his declaration of a broad 25% tariff on imported vehicles and many of their parts, provoking a strong response from Canada.
“We will impose a 25 percent tariff on all cars that are not manufactured in the United States. If they are produced in the United States, there will be no tariff at all,” Trump stated at the White House.

The White House announced that a 25% tariff will be applied to imported passenger vehicles including sedans, SUVs, crossovers, minivans, cargo vans, and light trucks, along with major automobile parts like engines, transmissions, powertrain components, and electrical parts.
Canada’s response to US tariffs on Cars
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that Canada will soon react to the US’s recent tariffs.
Describing the tariff on cars as a “direct attack,” Carney announced he would hold a senior cabinet meeting on Thursday to determine Canada’s reaction to the US action.
“We will defend our workers, we will defend our companies, we will defend our country, and we will defend it together,” he said.
