The Supreme Court has granted the National Board of Examinations’ (NBE) request to delay the NEET PG 2025 examination to August 3. The test was originally set for June 15.
A panel consisting of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Augustine George Masih granted the request made by the NBE for additional time to hold the NEET exam.
NBE’s request based on technical constraints
The bench stated that the NBE’s request was grounded in technical limitations. “The court noted that the request from NBE stated the earliest date available is 3rd August, as indicated by its technology partner TCS.”
The supreme court further clarified that this extension will be conclusive. Consequently, the timeframe provided by our previous order for conducting the NEET exam is prolonged. “It stated that no additional extensions would be allowed.”

During the hearing today, the bench initially questioned the NBE on the need for postponing the exam until August 3. In response, the NBE’s counsel explained that the exam was originally scheduled across 450 centres for over 2.5 lakh candidates.
However, following the Court’s directive to conduct the exam in a single shift, the number of centres now needs to be doubled. Identifying suitable centres and ensuring necessary security arrangements will require additional time, as reported by the Live Law.
Additionally, candidates need to be aware of the revised centres so they can choose accordingly — a task that is naturally time-intensive.
Previously, the NBE had told the supreme court that it would not be able to hold the exam prior to August 3. This revision came after the Supreme Court’s order that NEET PG should take place in a single shift nationwide, in contrast to the two-shift format of the previous year.
