October 7: The detention of a disabled young man during the INDIA bloc’s protest against the Election Commission has triggered a wave of anger on social media, with opposition supporters and activists questioning why police detained him as he joined the mobilisation outside the Commission’s office in New Delhi.
A video posted on social media on October 7 shows the young man being detained by Delhi Police near the protest zone. The post says he had come to support Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc MPs protesting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The footage has since been widely shared and reposted, with users expressing outrage over the manner in which the man was handled by police. Many posts have presented his detention as evidence of what they describe as an increasingly heavy-handed response to the opposition’s campaign against the SIR exercise.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of the INDIA bloc’s October 6 mobilisation outside the Election Commission. Opposition MPs had marched from Makar Dwar of Parliament towards Nirvachan Sadan, demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and opposing the SIR exercise.

Why the disabled man’s video has struck a nerve
The video of the disabled protester has attracted particular attention because it has become more than an account of an individual detention. For opposition supporters, his presence at the protest has been portrayed as evidence that resistance to the SIR exercise extends beyond political parties and Parliament.
Social-media users have repeatedly focused on the apparent contrast between the man’s physical vulnerability and the presence of several police officers around him. Some posts have accused the Delhi Police of insensitivity and excessive force, while others have questioned whether a disabled person who was merely participating in a political protest needed to be detained.
