October 7: Three men in a white Mercedes allegedly tried to drag a woman from Nagaland into their car outside a five-star hotel in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri and attacked her friends when they intervened, police said, in an incident that has raised concerns over the safety of women and visitors in the capital’s high-security diplomatic district.
The incident was reported at around 3.30 am on Sunday. According to the woman’s complaint, she had gone to the hotel with four friends and was returning from a washroom when the three unidentified men approached the group. The men allegedly tried to stop them before grabbing the woman and attempting to force her into the Mercedes.
Her friends intervened after she was allegedly pulled towards the vehicle. The woman told police that the confrontation then turned violent, with the three men allegedly attacking one of her friends, who she identified as a doctor, with a hockey stick and an iron rod. He was injured in the assault.
The woman also alleged that the Mercedes was being driven without a number plate. She said the men remained inside the vehicle even after police were called and allegedly tried to drive towards the group.
“They had removed their car’s number plate. We called the police, but the men remained in their car and tried to drive towards us,” she told news agency ANI.
She further alleged that she and her friends were taken to a police station after the incident but that officers initially did not register an FIR or formally record their complaint despite repeated requests.
The woman, who is from Nagaland and has lived in Delhi for several years, said she wanted the accused identified and arrested.
“We were five people, and they were three people. I am from Nagaland and have been living in Delhi for many years. I want the truth to come out and want them to be arrested, because this is an attempt to murder and kidnapping,” she said.
The woman was subsequently taken to RML Hospital, where she underwent a medical examination. Police said a case was registered on the basis of her complaint and the medical report.
Investigators are now examining CCTV footage from the hotel and surrounding areas to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the vehicle and the three men. Police are also examining other available evidence, including the medical reports of those involved, to establish the nature and extent of the injuries sustained during the confrontation.
The identities of the three men and the circumstances leading to the alleged confrontation have not yet been established. The allegations made by the woman are being investigated.
