Dr Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, who died on Tuesday, was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, a prominent science communicator, and a renowned astrophysicist.
As per his family, Dr Narlikar passed away during the night at his residence in Pune. He was eighty-seven.
Dr Narlikar has been an eminent personality in Indian science, recognized for his work in cosmology. He gained recognition for his endeavors to make science more accessible and for establishing leading research institutions in the nation.

Dr Narlikar’s Bio
Born on July 19, 1938, Dr Narlikar graduated from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and subsequently pursued advanced studies at Cambridge, where he earned the titles of Wrangler and Tyson Medallist in the Mathematical Tripos.
His father, Vishnu Vasudeva Narlikar, served as a professor and was the Head of the Mathematics Department at BHU.
Dr Narlikar became part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1972, following his return to India. He remained there until 1989, during which the Theoretical Astrophysics Group grew and gained international recognition under his leadership.
In 1988, the University Grants Commission asked Dr. Narlikar to establish the intended Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in the role of Founding Director.
He served as the director of IUCAA until he retired in 2003.
Under his leadership, IUCAA has gained an international reputation as a hub of excellence in education and research in astronomy and astrophysics. He held the title of Emeritus Professor at IUCAA.
