Agra Metro Project: Details and Benefits
The new section, known as the ‘priority corridor,’ will span from the Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar Temple, covering key landmarks such as the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Comprising six stations, including three elevated and three underground, the corridor aims to enhance connectivity and accessibility within the city.
The Agra Metro project encompasses two corridors totaling 29.4km, aiming to connect significant landmarks like the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Sikandra to railway stations and bus terminals. With an estimated cost of Rs 8,379.6 crore, the project is expected to serve Agra’s population of 26 lakh and accommodate over 60 lakh annual tourists, providing a sustainable and efficient Mass Rapid Transit System.

Environmental Benefits of Agra Metro
Panchanan Mishra, spokesperson of UP Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), emphasized the project’s environmental benefits and convenience for commuters. The trains, with a maximum speed of 90 kmph, will offer affordable fares, making transportation accessible to all segments of society. The fare structure will include Rs 10 for travel between two stations and Rs 20 for travel between three to six stations, ensuring affordability and convenience for passengers.

Last week, the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety granted final approval for the Agra Metro after a thorough inspection, paving the way for its inauguration. The distinctive yellow Agra Metro, powered by a third rail system, will ensure efficient operations and feature automatic climate control. Moreover, the project aims to recharge 10 lakh liters of groundwater annually, contributing to environmental conservation by constructing 300 recharge pits along the metro rail alignment.
