Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the foundation stone laying ceremony on February 26 to construct 550 Amrit Bharat stations, marking a significant milestone in India’s railway infrastructure development.
The move, aimed at enhancing railway station facilities, comes with a total investment of Rs 40,000 crore, according to a report by PTI. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to upgrading essential transportation infrastructure nationwide.
Foundation Stone Laying for Road Overbridges and Underbridges:
In addition to the Amrit Bharat stations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also lay the foundation stone for nearly 1,500 road overbridges and underbridges across various states during a virtual event. The event will be broadcast at over 2,000 railway stations, with the Prime Minister joining via video conferencing. This initiative reflects the government’s focus on improving connectivity and safety on roads and railways.
The foundation stone laying ceremony will also recognize approximately 50,000 school students participating in speech, essay, and poetry writing competitions on the theme “2047 – Viksit Bharat ki Railway.” These competitions, organized by Indian Railways across 4,000 schools, saw the participation of about four lakh students. The event aims to inspire young minds and foster a vision of sustainable development in the railway sector.

Amrit Bharat Station Scheme:
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, initiated for developing stations on Indian Railways, focuses on creating master plans and implementing them to enhance station amenities. Key features include improving station access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lifts/escalators, cleanliness, free WiFi, and kiosks for local products.
The scheme also emphasizes constructing executive lounges, designated spaces for business meetings, landscaping, and integrating stations with surrounding cities.
Prioritizing Sustainable Solutions:
Sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions are prioritized under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Proposals include road widening, removal of unwanted structures, well-designed signages, dedicated pedestrian pathways, planned parking areas, improved lighting, and high-level platforms at all station categories.
With a focus on sustainable development, this scheme aims to enhance the overall travel experience and accessibility for passengers while promoting eco-friendly practices.
