IPL 2025 saw its first Super Over in the match between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday. DC batted first to post 188/5, while RR also succeeded in getting 188/4 in 20 overs.
Following a slight wobble in the middle overs, Nitish Rana’s 51 runs from 28 balls helped put RR back on course. Nonetheless, the game proceeded to Super Over after the scores were leveled.
Notably, RR included Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Super Over. They were unable to finish the six balls, losing two wickets and scoring 11 runs. DC achieved the Super Over target of 12 runs in just four balls.
‘It’s the management’s decision’: Nitish Rana
Nitish Rana was questioned about not being sent in for the Super Over.
“The decision is made by the management, not an individual. The captain is present together with two additional senior players and coaches. If Shimron Hetmyer had hit two sixes, you wouldn’t be raising this question. I will give the same answer. I don’t have any other answer. Any choices we made were entirely correct. Hetmyer is our finisher, and that’s well-known to all. He has delivered in the past,” Rana stated during the press conference.

“One person never takes such calls. The management and support personnel are available to talk about such matters. If the outcome had favored us, your question would have changed. Cricket is a sport focused on outcomes. If Sandeep Sharma had performed effectively in the Super Over, as he has previously. In this circumstance, he was probably our bowler. We were one major opportunity short. Our aim was to score 15 runs in the Super Over.”
Delhi Capitals defeated Rajasthan Royals in the super over
In a contest marked by its ups and downs, Delhi Capitals (DC) maintained their composure to defeat Rajasthan Royals (RR) in an exciting Super Over, rising to the top of the points table at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
On a sluggish pitch, late innings contributions from captain Axar Patel, Tristan Stubbs, and Ashutosh Sharma salvaged DC from a challenging spot and allowed them to set a strong total of 188/5. In response, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana put RR on the path to victory by scoring 51 runs apiece.
However, Mitchell Starc’s defense of nine runs in the last over led to the game going into a Super Over, marking the first such instance in the IPL since 2022. Starc once more performed for DC in the Super Over, while RR was restricted to 12. Stubbs and KL Rahul maintained their composure to secure an amazing win for DC, marking their first triumph of the current season in New Delhi.
