The tragedy has once again highlighted Nagaland’s vulnerability to monsoon-induced landslides, prompting authorities to urge residents to avoid landslide-prone areas and follow disaster management advisories.

July 19, 2026: At least eight people, including four children, were killed after a massive landslide triggered by incessant monsoon rains buried houses in Nagaland’s Mon district on Sunday, officials said. Rescue teams are racing against time to locate the missing amid fears that the death toll could rise.
The landslide struck a vulnerable hillside settlement following hours of intense rainfall that also triggered flash floods across parts of the district. Mud, rocks and uprooted trees crashed down the slope, flattening homes and blocking access roads, leaving rescue workers struggling to reach the affected area.
Officials said eight people were initially feared trapped under the debris. Four bodies were receovered so far, while search and rescue operations were continuing for the remaining missing persons. Search and rescue teams were working in extremely challenging conditions due to continuous rain and unstable terrain.

Local residents, police personnel, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district administration officials and volunteers joined the rescue effort, using excavators and other heavy machinery where possible. However, intermittent rain, slippery slopes and the risk of fresh landslides have slowed operations.
Officials said several victims were believed to be inside their homes when the hillside collapsed. Children are feared to be among those trapped, although authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased pending notification of their families.

The disaster comes as relentless monsoon showers continue to lash Nagaland, causing flash floods, landslides and widespread disruption in several districts. Roads have been blocked by debris, bridges damaged and low-lying areas inundated, isolating a number of villages and hampering relief operations. Authorities have advised residents living in landslide-prone areas to move to safer locations and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.

Nagaland’s hilly terrain and fragile soil make it particularly vulnerable to rain-induced landslides during the southwest monsoon. Experts have repeatedly called for improved slope stabilisation measures, stricter regulation of construction in vulnerable zones and stronger early warning systems to minimise the impact of such disasters.
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with district authorities. Additional rescue personnel and relief materials have been dispatched to the affected area, while the administration has appealed to the public not to venture near the landslide site to avoid hampering rescue operations.
