Drone Sightings in the US, UK, and Germany
Unidentified drones have been a recurring presence over power stations and airports in Scandinavia in recent years, though authorities have yet to determine who is behind these flights. In November, several unidentified drones were seen flying over three US Air Force bases in the United Kingdom, while German authorities reported sightings over sensitive military and industrial sites, including the US airbase at Ramstein.
Concerns About Potential Russian Sabotage
The drone sightings in Koege come on the heels of several incidents involving undersea cables in the Baltic Sea, a region where Koege’s port is located. Last week, the Estlink 2 undersea power cable connecting Finland and Estonia was damaged, leading Finnish authorities to suspect sabotage. They detained the Cook Islands-flagged oil tanker Eagle S, a vessel believed to be part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” which is involved in circumventing international sanctions, particularly those on oil sales.
In a separate incident in November, two fiber-optic cables in the Baltic Sea were cut. Swedish authorities boarded a Chinese ship as part of their investigation into possible sabotage.
In response, NATO has announced plans to increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea as a deterrent.
