April 28, 2026 — A day after a high-voltage roadshow in Gangtok, Prime Minister Narendra Modi struck a relaxed chord on Tuesday morning, joining local children for a game of football in Sikkim’s capital. The light-hearted moment, however, carries deeper political undertones as the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly elections enter their final phase.
Modi, who arrived in Sikkim on April 27 to attend the concluding events of the state’s 50th Statehood Day celebrations, was seen enthusiastically interacting with young footballers in Gangtok. Sharing the moment on social media, he wrote: “Nothing like playing some football with my young friends in Sikkim on a lovely Gangtok morning!”
The timing of the visit is significant. With polling underway in neighbouring West Bengal — the second phase concluding today after the first on April 23 — the Prime Minister’s presence in Sikkim allows the BJP to remain visible in the region without breaching the Model Code of Conduct in the poll-bound state.

On Monday evening, Modi led a massive roadshow through Gangtok, dressed in traditional attire, drawing enthusiastic crowds as he travelled from Libing helipad to Raj Bhavan. The visit is part of Sikkim’s golden jubilee celebrations, during which he is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore.

Observers say the optics are carefully calibrated. As the fiercely contested Bengal elections approach their conclusion, the BJP is seeking to reinforce its outreach in the Northeast while projecting a development-focused narrative. The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, an ally of the BJP, has thrown its full weight behind the visit.
Beyond politics, the football session underscores Modi’s continued emphasis on youth engagement and sports. He is also expected to inaugurate new sports infrastructure, including indoor cricket facilities in Rangpo, highlighting the Centre’s push to strengthen grassroots sporting ecosystems.
With results for the Bengal polls due on May 4, images of a relaxed Prime Minister connecting with young citizens in Sikkim are likely to feed into the BJP’s broader campaign narrative of accessibility, development, and grassroots connect.
