Kuki Inpi Manipur has extended its 48-hour shutdown by another 48 hours, citing government inaction and lack of progress in securing the release of abducted individuals.

May 17, 2026: Hundreds of trucks carrying essential goods remain stranded across Manipur’s hill districts as an ongoing shutdown over the alleged abduction of Kuki-Zo civilians continues to disrupt normal movement, even as Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) extended its agitation by another 48 hours.
The shutdown, which has brought transport and trade to a near standstill in several areas, comes amid escalating tensions over the reported detention of Kuki-Zo individuals in Senapati district. The situation has led to severe disruption of supply chains, with vehicles stuck at multiple checkpoints and key transit routes remaining blocked or heavily restricted.
Shutdown Extended Amid Government Inaction
In a press statement issued by its Secretariat on May 17 under reference 04/KIM/PR/25-21, Kuki Inpi Manipur announced the extension of its ongoing 48-hour shutdown by another 48 hours, citing what it described as continued government inaction over its demands and the unresolved hostage situation.
The organisation said the decision followed “thorough deliberation” and was prompted by the lack of progress on its Charter of Demands submitted to the Prime Minister of India on May 14, 2026, as well as the failure to secure the release of abducted Kuki individuals.
The extended shutdown will come into effect from midnight on May 17.

Appeal for Solidarity, Warning of Escalation
KIM expressed gratitude to its federating units, civil society organisations, and the Kuki-Zo public for their support, urging continued enforcement of the shutdown across all affiliated bodies.
While exemptions have been announced for medical emergencies and essential humanitarian services, the public has been strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel due to prevailing tensions and disruptions.
The organisation also warned that continued inaction by authorities could lead to intensified agitation in the coming days if the alleged abducted individuals are not released.

Transport Disruption Deepens Crisis
The extended shutdown has worsened an already fragile situation in the hill districts, with hundreds of goods vehicles stranded along major routes. Transporters report delays in the movement of essential supplies, raising concerns over shortages if the situation persists.
Local sources say the disruption has affected both inter-district and interstate connectivity, compounding pressure on already strained logistics networks.
Reiterating its position, Kuki Inpi Manipur said the continued silence of authorities was “deeply unfortunate and unacceptable,” urging immediate and decisive intervention to address the crisis.
“The Government must act with urgency and responsibility before the situation deteriorates further,” the statement read.
As the shutdown enters its extended phase, uncertainty continues to grip the hill districts, with both transporters and residents awaiting signs of resolution amid rising tensions over the hostage allegations.
