Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena has approved the appointment of Azimul Haque as the CEO of the Delhi Waqf Board, assigning him the role as an additional charge. The decision comes after the LG criticized the AAP government for its negligence and failure to adhere to legal procedures, leading to operational disruptions within the Board.
Saxena highlighted that the position of CEO had been vacant since November 28, 2024. The delay in proposing a replacement caused significant hardships, including the suspension of salaries for Imams and Mutawallis and rendering the Board non-functional.
“The government only sent the proposal for assigning additional charge of the CEO after a one-month delay, displaying an unacceptable level of callousness. This has adversely affected the day-to-day functioning of the Board and caused suffering for poor functionaries dependent on their salaries,” Saxena noted.
While approving the appointment, the LG stressed that the proposal must be ratified by the Board before taking effect. He also urged the government to strictly adhere to legal provisions in future appointments, citing the Delhi Waqf Act, 1995.
Saxena pointed out procedural lapses in the current proposal, including the absence of a panel of two recommended names as required by Section 23 of the Act. Instead, the government submitted only one name for consideration.
The LG emphasized the importance of compliance with statutory provisions to ensure transparency and efficiency in the functioning of the Waqf Board, urging the AAP government to act responsibly in handling such critical matters.
