Leh, May 7: The Union Territory of Ladakh is set to modernise its urban transport infrastructure with the construction of 30 uniquely designed smart bus shelters in Leh, blending cutting-edge passenger amenities with the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The project has been approved by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and will be implemented by Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (SIDCO).
Inspired by traditional Ladakhi Gonpas, the new bus shelters will incorporate distinctive local architectural features such as Shingtsak woodwork, traditional Pentsak paintings, mud plastering, lime whitewashing, prayer wheels, decorative murals, and ornate finishes. The initiative aims to preserve Ladakh’s cultural identity while introducing modern, climate-responsive public infrastructure.
The smart shelters will be equipped with a host of advanced facilities, including GPS-enabled real-time passenger information systems, 55-inch digital display screens, Wi-Fi connectivity, CCTV surveillance, SOS emergency buttons, mobile and laptop charging stations, and solar-powered energy systems. Each shelter will also feature heated seating, thermal-insulated walls and roofs, and wind-protected enclosures to help commuters withstand Ladakh’s harsh winters, where temperatures often plunge below freezing.
Additional passenger-friendly amenities will include tactile tiles for visually impaired commuters, first-aid kits, emergency oxygen cylinders, fire safety systems, and comfortable seating arrangements.
Officials said the project was conceptualised under the directions of LG Saxena in response to the growing need for efficient and comfortable public transport facilities in Leh, a major tourist hub and administrative centre in the Himalayan region.

“The initiative aims to transform public transport infrastructure in Leh by creating modern, sustainable, and people-centric urban infrastructure while preserving Ladakh’s unique cultural and architectural identity,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The smart bus shelters will also integrate Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and ICT-enabled technologies such as cloud-based Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) software and GPS-based real-time bus tracking systems, allowing commuters to access live transport updates.
To promote sustainable urban mobility, every shelter will include a 2 kWp solar photovoltaic system with battery storage, hybrid inverters, and grid connectivity, helping reduce dependence on conventional energy and lowering carbon emissions.
Authorities believe the project will significantly improve commuter comfort, encourage greater use of public transport, and serve as a model for eco-friendly infrastructure development in high-altitude regions.
