July 10, 2026: Ladakh is witnessing an unprecedented tourism boom, with foreign tourist arrivals nearly doubling in June 2026 and overall visitor numbers registering a sharp 44 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the Union Territory’s growing appeal as a year-round global travel destination.
According to data released by the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat, 6,680 foreign tourists visited Ladakh in June this year, almost double the 3,349 international visitors recorded during the corresponding month in 2025. The 99.46 per cent growth reflects Ladakh’s increasing popularity among overseas travellers seeking adventure, spirituality, cultural experiences and sustainable tourism in the Himalayas.
Israel remained the largest source of foreign visitors, followed by tourists from Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Taiwan, Russia, Italy, South Korea, Spain and several other European and Southeast Asian nations.
The surge was equally visible in overall tourist arrivals. Ladakh welcomed 1,07,740 visitors in June 2026, marking a 43.48 per cent increase over the 75,089 tourists who visited during the same month last year.
Official figures show that between January and June 2026, Ladakh received 2,25,286 tourists, comprising 2,11,645 domestic and 13,641 foreign visitors. The sustained growth signals rising traveller confidence in Ladakh as one of India’s most sought-after all-season destinations.
The Union Territory Administration attributed the robust growth to a series of tourism reforms and infrastructure initiatives undertaken under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, aimed at improving visitor experiences while promoting sustainable development.
Describing tourism as one of the strongest pillars of Ladakh’s economy, the Lieutenant Governor said the impressive increase in arrivals reflects the Administration’s continued efforts to position the region as a premier destination without compromising environmental sustainability.

“Tourism is a vital source of livelihood for thousands of people in Ladakh. The remarkable increase in tourist arrivals has renewed economic opportunities for hoteliers, guest house owners, homestay operators, tour operators, transporters, trekking guides, artisans, entrepreneurs and local communities whose livelihoods depend on the sector,” Saxena said.

He also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on promoting domestic tourism, along with the Centre’s substantial investment in infrastructure, for accelerating tourism growth, boosting the local economy and generating employment.
Since assuming office, Saxena has placed tourism development high on the Administration’s agenda. Several policy reforms have been introduced, including simplifying regulatory procedures, reducing compliance requirements, granting Industry Status to hotels and guest houses, improving tourism infrastructure, strengthening air and road connectivity, expanding visitor amenities and encouraging greater private investment in the sector.
The Administration has also sought to diversify Ladakh’s tourism portfolio beyond its traditional summer season by promoting winter tourism, adventure sports, high-altitude trekking, wildlife tourism, rural tourism, wellness tourism, cultural tourism, spiritual tourism and astro-tourism.
Officials said the hosting of national and international sporting events, cultural festivals and promotional campaigns has further enhanced Ladakh’s visibility in both domestic and overseas tourism markets while extending the tourist season beyond the peak summer months.
With visitor numbers continuing to rise, the Administration believes Ladakh is steadily consolidating its position as one of India’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, balancing economic growth with sustainable and responsible tourism practices.
