May 30, 2026: The Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has issued a wide-ranging set of austerity and sustainability measures aimed at reducing resource consumption, promoting renewable energy, and strengthening local livelihoods, following directions from Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
According to a statement from the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat, the initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for resource conservation, sustainable development, and self-reliance. LG Saxena has instructed all departments to adopt time-bound and measurable steps to ensure effective implementation across the administration.
The measures focus on reducing fuel consumption, cutting down government vehicle usage, and encouraging a shift toward renewable energy systems. Officials have also been directed to expand the use of digital platforms and video conferencing to minimise physical travel and improve administrative efficiency.
Immediately after the Prime Minister’s appeal, LG Saxena reportedly reduced his official cavalcade by 50 percent as a symbolic step toward austerity.

In his directions, Saxena emphasised that sustainable governance is not merely a policy objective but a collective responsibility, particularly for a sensitive ecological region like Ladakh.
“The Prime Minister has given a timely and visionary call for adopting sustainable practices in our daily lives and governance systems. Ladakh, with its unique ecology, is well placed to lead by example,” the LG said in the statement.
Departments across administration have been tasked with implementing specific action points. The Power, Transport, and Urban Development departments will focus on expanding rooftop solar installations, promoting electric vehicles, and strengthening charging infrastructure. The Public Works Department has been asked to explore green construction technologies, including the use of plastic waste in road building and bio-bitumen alternatives.
The Industries, Commerce, Handicrafts, and Rural Development departments have been directed to promote local products under the “Vocal for Local” and “One District One Product” initiatives, while strengthening MSMEs, cooperatives, and self-help groups.
The Tourism Department has been instructed to position Ladakh as a leading domestic tourism destination, with emphasis on eco-tourism, adventure, cultural, and spiritual travel, alongside responsible tourism practices.
In agriculture and horticulture, the administration plans to promote natural farming and sustainable practices through training, demonstrations, and improved market linkages for farmers. The Health Department will also launch awareness campaigns on healthy lifestyles, including reducing excessive edible oil consumption.
All departments have been asked to submit Action Taken Reports within 30 days, along with public awareness campaigns on energy conservation, local products, and sustainable living.
Officials said the initiative marks a coordinated push to translate the Centre’s sustainability vision into ground-level governance reforms in the Union Territory.
