Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Monday claimed that the water at the current Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj was polluted due to the bodies of people who died in last month’s stampede being discarded into the river.
The actor-politician criticized the government in Uttar Pradesh, led by Yogi Adityanath, for failing to make any special arrangements for the general public.
“Where is the water currently the most polluted?” It’s located in Kumbh. Bodies of individuals (who perished in the stampede) have been discarded into the river, leading to water contamination. The genuine problems are not being tackled. The ordinary visitors at Kumbh are not given any special care, and there are no provisions for them,” she told reporters outside Parliament.
Bachchan stated that no postmortem examinations were conducted on the bodies and that there was a “complete eyewash” regarding the stampede that resulted in 30 deaths on January 29 and injured 60 more individuals.

“This same water is reaching the people there. They (BJP government) are not giving any explanation on this and a complete eyewash is being done,” she said.
“They are delivering talks on water and Jal Shakti. They are falsely claiming that millions of people have visited the place. How is it possible for so many people to assemble in that location at any moment?” she remarked.
Various opposition parties, such as Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, have charged the Uttar Pradesh government with “concealing” the true number of fatalities in the Kumbh and have called for a parliamentary discussion on the matter.
A tragic stampede happened on January 29, as millions of worshippers assembled to bathe in an area referred to as the Sangam Nose – a land segment at the junction of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the legendary Saraswati rivers. A bath at the meeting point of the rivers on ‘Mauni Amavasya’ is regarded auspicious.
