IPL Code of Conduct Violation: David and Pollard’s Signaling Incident During MI vs PBKS Match
Although the BCCI did not disclose the specifics of their offense, it was evident that it stemmed from the signals David and Pollard sent to MI batting players Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav to review a wide call in the match’s fifteenth over.
Arshdeep Singh, pacer for PBKS, bowled a wide yorker in the final ball of the 15th over, and Suryakumar Yadav failed to make any contact. The referee made the decision not to call it a wide. But then the camera moved to the MI dugout, where Tim David and batting coach Kieron Pollard could be seen urging the batter to take a review by making the ‘T’ sign with his hands, as reported by Wisden, and head coach Mark Boucher signaling to Suryakumar that it was a wide.
To the dismay of PBSK stand-in captain Sam Curran, SKY requested the review, and it was granted. The ruling was overturned and a wide was given by the third umpire. For the 15th over to end with a boundary, Arshdeep needed to bowl one more delivery.
A player participating on the field is not permitted to “seek assistance from any person off the field of play in order to decide whether to request a referral to the TV Umpire,” as stated in Article 2.15 (b) of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.
