A 21-year-old individual from Kolar district in Karnataka passed away after drinking five bottles of alcohol without water according to a bet. The event took place in Pujarahalla village.
The deceased, Karthik, allegedly made a bet with his friend Venkata Reddy, consenting to consume the alcohol undiluted in return for Rs 10,000.
On Sunday night, he drank all five bottles, without adding water, following the rules of the wager. Soon after, he fell down and was quickly taken to the hospital. In spite of the physicians’ attempts, Karthik passed away during his treatment.
Karthik had just recently become a dad. His wife had delivered their daughter only nine days prior to his passing. The pair had been wed for one year.
The police in Mulbagal have initiated an inquiry into the details surrounding the incident. Officials have emphasized the risks of irresponsible drinking and called on the public to steer clear of dangerous behaviors related to alcohol.
Experts persist in warning about the dangers of alcohol abuse. The World Health Organisation (WHO) asserts that there is no scientifically determined “safe” amount of alcohol intake.
The WHO states that there is no level of alcohol consumption that is without health hazards, including cancer. Its 2023 report indicated that current evidence fails to demonstrate any threshold beneath which alcohol’s cancer-causing effects do not take place.
Additionally, the WHO emphasizes that there are no studies at present demonstrating that the possible advantages of light or moderate alcohol consumption exceed the heightened risk of cancer.
Dr Carina Ferreira-Borges, Regional Advisor for Alcohol and Illicit Drugs at WHO Europe states, “We cannot talk about a so-called safe level of alcohol use. It doesn’t matter how much you drink; the risk to the drinker’s health starts from the first drop.”
