The action follows the Mokama MLA’s campaign against JD(U) nominee Neeraj Kumar in the Bihar Legislative Council polls and a controversial remark about nine killings that he later sought to clarify.

October 24: The Janata Dal (United) has expelled Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh,a dreaded history-sheeter, and his wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, for six years over alleged anti-party activities, cancelling their primary membership with immediate effect.
In an order issued on October 24, Bihar JD(U) president Umesh Singh Kushwaha accused Singh of repeatedly defying party directives, using insulting language against senior leaders and campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh against the JD(U)’s nominee, Neeraj Kumar, in the Patna Graduates’ constituency. The party has also decided to ask Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar to initiate proceedings concerning Singh’s membership under the Constitution’s Tenth Schedule.

The expulsion follows a public feud between Singh and Neeraj Kumar, a rivalry dating back to the 2015 Mokama Assembly election, when Singh contested as an Independent and defeated the then-JD(U) candidate. Singh continued backing Anuj Singh despite appeals from JD(U) leaders, including party national president Nitish Kumar and working president Sanjay Kumar Jha.
The controversy intensified after Singh questioned Neeraj Kumar’s political standing and criticised the party for supporting a rival who, he alleged, had opposed him in earlier elections. He also dismissed Neeraj Kumar’s hospitalisation shortly before polling as theatrics. Attempts by party leaders to resolve the dispute reportedly failed.

The disciplinary action comes days after Singh triggered a separate controversy by saying he had got “nine people murdered” to support Nitish Kumar. He later said his remarks had been misunderstood, claiming that nine of his associates had been killed during the RJD government because of their alignment with Nitish Kumar. The JD(U) had distanced itself from the initial remark.
The dispute spilled into the Legislative Council election campaign, where Singh backed Anuj Singh against Neeraj Kumar. Supporters of the rival candidates clashed in Mokama on polling day, and several people were detained, according to reports. Neeraj Kumar expressed confidence in winning the Patna Graduates’ seat, where provisional voter turnout was recorded at 36.19 per cent. Union minister Lalan Singh met Nitish Kumar shortly before the expulsions were announced.
Chhote Sarkar of Bihar crime world
Anant Singh, popularly known as “Chhote Sarkar”, has been a prominent figure in Bihar’s strongman politics for decades, with a criminal record dating back to 1979. Media reports citing court records and election affidavits have linked the Mokama MLA to more than 50 criminal cases, including allegations of murder, kidnapping, extortion and illegal possession of arms. However, the number of cases against him should not be mistaken for the number of convictions.
In 2019, a police raid at Singh’s residence led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, two hand grenades and ammunition. He was convicted in the arms case in 2022 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, but the Patna High Court acquitted him in 2024, citing insufficient evidence.

In a more recent case, Singh was arrested in connection with the October 2025 killing of political worker Dularchand Yadav during an election campaign clash. The High Court granted him bail in March 2026, imposing conditions that included restrictions against tampering with evidence or intimidating witnesses. His career continues to draw attention to the enduring influence of strongmen in Bihar’s electoral politics and the complex relationship between criminal allegations and political power.
