New Delhi:
As India gears up for the upcoming Asia Cup T20I, the core of the squad appears largely settled. However, the spotlight at the selection meeting on Tuesday is set to fall on one crucial decision who will be India’s 15th man.
The choice is expected to narrow down to a contest between specialist batsman Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Washington Sundar, though names like Rinku Singh and Riyan Parag may also enter the discussion.

The Case for Shreyas Iyer
If the selectors prioritize batting depth, Shreyas Iyer is likely to be the frontrunner. A proven performer in the IPL, he has led two different franchises to successive finals with consistent performances, particularly against spin.
Iyer is known for his composure, ability to anchor an innings, and finishing skills. His leadership qualities and growing confidence make him a strong candidate for the last spot. As many argue, the player who shaped the last IPL season “should logically be in the Indian T20 side.”
The Case for Washington Sundar
On the other hand, team balance might tilt the decision in favor of Washington Sundar. The all-rounder impressed in England earlier this year, contributing vital lower-order runs and picking up crucial wickets with his off-spin.
Sundar’s utility in UAE-like conditions where spin plays a big role could be invaluable. His previous success in Dubai, including being part of India’s ICC Champions Trophy-winning squad, strengthens his case. Moreover, head coach Gautam Gambhir’s preference for batting and bowling depth could work in his favor.
What About Rinku Singh?
Rinku Singh’s name will also be on the table. He has earned the “finisher” tag both in the IPL and in his brief international outings. His five consecutive sixes in the IPL remain one of the most remarkable finishes in cricket history, cementing his reputation as an endgame player.
However, Gambhir’s philosophy of avoiding the “finisher” label for players may work against Rinku. He remains more of a situational batsman than a consistent middle-order anchor.

Riyan Parag: An Outside Contender
Another option could be Riyan Parag, though he is seen as an outside contender. The Assam batter has shown glimpses of talent with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL but has struggled for consistency.
While he brings a secondary skill with his part-time off-spin, his bowling is generally limited to a couple of overs. Selectors may continue to wait for him to display maturity and reliability before giving him a national call-up.
The Big Call
The selectors ultimately face a tough decision:
-
Shreyas Iyer, who offers stability and batting class.
-
Washington Sundar, who provides balance with his all-round abilities.
-
Rinku Singh, the explosive finisher.
-
Riyan Parag, the young talent with potential.
Whichever way the decision goes, the 15th spot will be crucial in shaping India’s campaign at the Asia Cup.
