n yet another innovative move spearheaded by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has begun using jute carpeting on pathways and walking/cycling tracks across its parks, particularly those located along the Yamuna floodplains.
Drawing from his experience with jute during his tenure as Chairperson of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Saxena personally led the initiative, directing DDA to install jute carpets on walking, cycling, and driving tracks at Asita Park, situated across the Yamuna opposite ITO.

Previously, the LG had prohibited the concretization of parks on the floodplains to protect the environment. However, this led to dust generation along the tracks, causing inconvenience to park users and contributing to environmental pollution. To address the issue, Saxena recommended the use of loosely knitted jute carpeting.
The initial deployment at Asita Park has yielded promising results. Not only has dust been significantly reduced, but grass has also begun to grow through the gaps in the carpet, naturally anchoring it to the ground and enhancing the park’s green cover. The solution has proven to be both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.

Encouraged by the success, the LG has directed that the jute carpeting be replicated along the tracks inside the Northern Ridge, where restoration efforts are underway following Saxena’s recent inspection.
Beyond environmental benefits, this initiative also provides a boost to jute farmers and the jute industry, offering them a much-needed economic opportunity.
