Reviving Delhi’s green lungs! Kamla Nehru Ridge to get a new water body and biodiversity facelift as LG pushes for ecological conservation and infrastructure upgrades.

In a proactive move to strengthen Delhi’s monsoon preparedness and ecological infrastructure, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena conducted a detailed inspection of Kamla Nehru Ridge (Northern Ridge) on 28.05.2025. He issued a series of directives to Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Public Works Department (PWD) officials, emphasizing expedited revamp, beautification, and biodiversity conservation measures.
During his visit, the LG proposed an innovative measure to address both waterlogging and ecological rejuvenation: the construction of direct pipelines from roadside footpaths to the Kamla Nehru Ridge forest. These pipelines—measuring three feet in diameter and extending four feet into the Ridge—will divert excess rainwater from surrounding areas like Malka Ganj and Civil Lines into the forest, helping recharge groundwater and support the creation of a new water body.
This integrated approach aims to mitigate chronic waterlogging in densely populated neighborhoods such as Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Delhi University, and Civil Lines, while simultaneously enhancing the Ridge’s ecological value.

Review of Ridge Development Works
The LG inspected ongoing works following his earlier visit on 21.03.2025. These include improvements to walking paths using eco-friendly jute mats, repair of damaged gym equipment and boundary walls, and attention to decaying heritage structures like “Bonta.” Expressing satisfaction with completed works, he instructed officials to complete remaining upgrades swiftly.
Other directives included:
-
Uniform widening and repair of footpaths along Rajpur Road and Delhi University.
-
Tree pruning, manhole cover repairs, and installation of secondary covers for water tapping pits.
-
Relocation of electric poles obstructing pedestrian pathways

The LG also emphasized clearing excess foliage, dead wood, hanging wires, and unused cables to restore the Ridge’s aesthetics and promote ecological balance. These measures are expected to be completed within seven days.
During the visit, LG Saxena engaged with local residents and RWA members, listening to their concerns and assuring responsive action.
Post his Ridge inspection, the LG reviewed progress at Sadbhavna Park, located opposite Raj Ghat and currently under development as a key public green space. He assessed landscaping, infrastructure installations—such as a central Clock Tower, Sarathi Chariot, and Yakshini sculptures—and directed intensified greening efforts to enhance its visual appeal and community utility.
Sadbhavna Park is one of four major parks being developed behind Delhi’s Walled City to provide accessible, vibrant green spaces for local residents.
The LG emphasized regular monitoring of all redevelopment activities at both Kamla Nehru Ridge and Sadbhavna Park to ensure quality execution within stipulated timelines.
