India’s coach Gautam Gambhir has stated that the team cannot consistently rely on Jasprit Bumrah for results following their defeat in the Sydney Test on Sunday, January 5. Bumrah did not bowl on Day 3 of the important match because of a back spasm, which restricted him to only 10 overs in the entire game for both innings.
This indicated that India entered the defense of the total of 162 without their key bowler, leading Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj to shoulder the primary responsibility. Australia successfully mitigated the risk posed by the Bumrah-less bowling unit and ultimately secured victory in the match by 6 wickets, thereby winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1.
During the post-match press conference, Gambhir stated that the team’s inability to win wasn’t because of Bumrah’s absence. The coach of India stated that they still possessed a strong team but could not achieve the desired outcome.
“First of all, I don’t want to say that, since Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t there, we couldn’t get the result. We had our moments, and it would have been nice if he had been there. We still had 5 bowlers and a good team that shouldn’t be dependent on one individual. We didn’t get the result, as simple as it gets,” said Gambhir.
Bumrah concluded the series with 32 wickets at an impressive average of 13.06. Gambhir mentioned it was a remarkable display by the pacer and that he did everything he could throughout the series. Gambhir also stated that Bumrah received backing from Mohammed Siraj and several of the younger bowlers on the other side.
