The British Chess Championships 2026 are set to make history as the largest edition in the tournament’s 122 year history, with more than 1,700 players expected to compete across all sections. The prestigious event will be held in Coventry from August 1–9. It will bring together the nation’s top grandmasters, experienced professionals, and a new generation of rising stars.
Among the biggest names to watch is 11 year old FIDE Master Bodhana Sivanandan. His remarkable rise has made her one of the most exciting young talents in world chess. Fresh off her record-breaking victory over French Grandmaster Marc’Andria Maurizzi (2628), Bodhana arrives in Coventry with growing expectations after becoming the youngest girl ever to defeat a grandmaster rated above 2600.
The championship will feature a wide range of events, including the Open Championship, Women’s Championship, junior competitions, rapid and blitz tournaments, making it one of the largest chess festivals in the United Kingdom. The record breaking participation reflects the continued growth and popularity of chess across Britain.
Bodhana enters the Open Championship as one of the highest rated participants, holding the FIDE Master (FM) title and a FIDE rating of over 2350. At just 11 years old, she has already established herself as Britain’s highest rated female player and continues to rewrite the record books with her outstanding performances.
While established grandmasters will battle for the coveted British title, many fans will be watching Bodhana’s campaign with particular interest. Her rapid progress, fearless style, and recent international success have positioned her as one of the tournament’s biggest attractions.
