September 21: A disturbing video purportedly showing a young couple being grabbedm molested, and and intimidated by a group of men in an apparent case of moral policing has triggered outrage in Bihar. The footage shows the woman, dressed in a white top and dark trousers, with a young man near a two-wheeler when several men surround them and prey upon the hapless pair.
In one of the most disturbing moments captured on camera, a man whose face appears to be covered approaches the woman from behind and grabbed her. She can be heard screaming and visibly resists , while the molester liftts her by placing his hands between her legs. The couple eventually manage to move away from the group.
The video, which has spread rapidly across social media, is being claimed to have been recorded in Jamui, Bihar. However, the exact location and date on which the footage was recorded have not yet been independently established.

The circumstances that led to the confrontation are also unclear. Social-media users have described the episode as moral policing, particularly because the woman appears to be dressed in contemporary Western-style clothing and was out with a male companion. However, there is currently no independent confirmation that her clothing was the reason for the confrontation.
A longer sequence circulating online appears to show the couple with their scooter or two-wheeler before the group approaches them. The men are seen confronting the pair, while the woman appears increasingly distressed. In another portion of the footage, the couple appear to plead with the group before leaving the spot.
The apparent attempt by one of the men to physically take hold of the woman has intensified the outrage. Questions are being raised over how a group of private individuals could allegedly surround a woman and interfere with her movements simply because they objected to her presence with a male companion or disapproved of her appearance or conduct.
Questions over moral policing
The episode has revived concerns over the growing use of moral policing, in which private individuals attempt to enforce their own standards of acceptable behaviour, dress or relationships on others.
The footage does not establish what prompted the confrontation or whether the men believed they were policing the couple’s behaviour. Those questions will have to be answered through an investigation.
But the images have nevertheless provoked a fundamental question: can a group of men take it upon themselves to stop, surround, intimidate or physically restrain a woman simply because they disapprove of how she is dressed or whom she is with?
The viral footage has already generated widespread condemnation online. The immediate task for the authorities, however, is to establish where and when the incident occurred, identify those involved, determine what happened before the camera began recording and take action if any criminal offence is found to have been committed.
Until those facts are established, the video remains evidence of an alleged confrontation rather than a complete account of what happened.
