Assam Horror: Man Beheads Wife, Rides to Police Carrying it

A horrifying incident has emerged from Assam's Chirang district where a 60-year-old man, Bitish Hajong, allegedly decapitated his wife, Bajanti Hajong, after a domestic quarrel. He then reportedly carried her severed head on his bicycle for several kilometers to surrender at the Ballamguri police outpost, leaving the community in shock.

The brutal murder of a woman in Chirang, Assam, allegedly by her husband, Bitish Hajong, has come to light. Following a domestic dispute, Hajong is accused of beheading his wife and then transporting her severed head to the local police station to confess. This disturbing event underscores a worrying pattern of similar gruesome crimes across India.

BY PC Bureau

in a gruesome case that has sent shockwaves across Assam, a 60-year-old man allegedly beheaded his wife following a domestic altercation and rode several kilometers with her severed head to surrender at a police outpost.

The incident occurred late Saturday night in Chirang district. The accused, Bitish Hajong, a daily-wage laborer from Uttar Ballamguri, reportedly used a sharp weapon to kill his wife, Bajanti Hajong, after a fight at their home. He then placed her severed head in a storage basket on his bicycle and rode to the nearby Ballamguri police outpost, where he confessed to the crime.

Disturbing visuals from the police station show bloodstains on the bicycle and the accused being taken into custody. Officials confirmed that the murder was allegedly the culmination of ongoing domestic tensions.

“Neighbours reported that the couple often quarreled over minor issues. On Saturday, following another argument, the man appears to have snapped,” said a local resident.

Police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene.

“We have detained the husband. The investigation is ongoing, and it would be premature to speculate further,” said Rashmirekha Sarma, Additional Superintendent of Police, Chirang.

Not an Isolated Incident

Unfortunately, this is not the first time such a gruesome act has made headlines in India.

  • Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh (August 2019)
    • A man beheaded his wife on a road in Satyaranayana Puram and proceeded to the police station to surrender, carrying her severed head. Witnesses reported that he threw the head into a nearby canal after passers-by shouted at him, leaving the body abandoned on the road. The motive was not specified in the report.
  • Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh (February 2020)
    • A man walked to a police station in Barabanki carrying his wife’s severed head, reportedly chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.” The motive was not detailed in the report, but the act was described as a public spectacle, with the man surrendering to authorities.

  • Dhenkanal, Odisha (July 2022)
    • Nakaphodi Majhi, aged 55, allegedly beheaded his 45-year-old wife, Sachala Majhi, in Chandrasekharpur village, suspecting her of infidelity. Between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM, he slit her throat with a sharp weapon and beheaded her. He then walked to Gondia police station with her severed head to surrender. On his way, villagers at Jankira detained him and informed the police, who seized the weapon and head. The couple had frequent disputes, and their two sons lived elsewhere.
  • Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh (June 2024)
    • Mohd Arbaz, along with his aide Mohd Shah Rukh, allegedly beheaded his 21-year-old wife, Chahat, whom he had married six months earlier without informing his family. About seven days prior to June 27, 2024, they beheaded her, chopped off her hands, packed her body in a sack, and attempted to dump it in the Kali River. The body did not sink due to a weak current. On June 27, Arbaz returned to check on the body and was caught by police after a tip-off while trying to push the sack further into the water. He was arrested while attempting to dispose of the evidence, though he initially intended to surrender.
  • In West Bengal, a similarly shocking case was reported in 2023 in Murshidabad district, where a man beheaded his wife in a fit of rage following a domestic dispute. The accused, identified as Dulal Sheikh, paraded through the village holding his wife’s severed head before being arrested by police. The chilling incident was captured by stunned bystanders and widely circulated on social media, sparking national outrage.
  • In Maharashtra’s Pune, another horrific case occurred in 2022, where a man killed his wife over suspected infidelity and calmly walked into a police station with her head in a bag, confessing to the murder.

However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
