November 7, 2026: Clashes between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters broke out outside the Kalighat residence of TMC National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata in the early hours of Saturday, raising questions about the presence of BJP workers near his house after midnight and the police response to the gathering.
The violence erupted around 2 a.m. when TMC supporters, who had assembled outside Banerjee’s residence to celebrate his birthday, confronted a group of BJP workers. The confrontation escalated into stone- and brick-throwing, physical scuffles and the tearing down of banners and posters. Police detained several people and deployed additional forces to bring the situation under control.
After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today. Watch the footage and see for yourself.
If this is what can happen to an elected Member of Parliament, imagine the plight of the common man in WB.
This is the seventh attempt on my life in the last six months. Yet, there has been no police action and no judicial intervention.
Hooligans are running riot across the state because the judiciary continues to turn a blind eye.
Thank you, Milords, for remaining mute spectators! 🙏🏻

The circumstances that brought BJP workers to the area at that hour remain unclear. It is also not clear why police allowed rival political groups to gather near the residence, given the potential for a confrontation.
Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters had planned the attack after conducting reconnaissance of his residence and office over two days. In posts on X and statements to the media, he claimed that the attackers assaulted TMC workers, threw them to the ground and pelted them with stones and bricks in the presence of police personnel.
He further alleged that some of the attackers were carrying revolvers and intended to kill him. According to Banerjee, one TMC worker suffered severe injuries to his thumb that would require plastic surgery, while another sustained a facial bone fracture.
Describing the incident as the seventh attempt on his life in six months, Banerjee accused the police of inaction and criticised the Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court as “mute spectators”. He had earlier circulated a video alleging that unidentified persons claiming to be police personnel had been keeping watch on his residence.
Videos shared by Banerjee showed people pulling down banners and cutouts. One clip showed a man striking a gate with a bamboo stick. Banerjee also came out of his residence and was seen arguing with police personnel and members of the opposing group.

West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh dismissed Banerjee’s allegations as “drama” and an attempt to mislead the public. Questioning the birthday celebrations on the footpath, he suggested that a late-night gathering causing a disturbance would naturally invite a reaction.
“Who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee?” Ghosh asked.
BJP supporters offered a different account, claiming they were on their way to purchase Kali idols for an upcoming puja when they were confronted by TMC workers.
Police sources said the disturbances occurred between approximately 2 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Several people were detained, although police did not publicly identify their political affiliations. Officials said the situation had been brought under control.
The full sequence of events has not been independently established. Banerjee’s allegations about the presence of firearms and the precise circumstances of the reported injuries also remain to be independently verified.
The incident has added to the political tensions in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, with the rival parties offering sharply conflicting accounts of the violence.
