Dr BN Gangadhar appointed chairperson of National Medical Commission

The ACC has appointed Dr B N Gangadhar as the NMC's chairperson. He formerly served as president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

Dr BN Gangadhar appointed chairperson of National Medical Commission

The ACC has appointed Dr B N Gangadhar as the chairperson of the National Medical Commission. He formerly served as president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

Dr Gangadhar, the former director of India’s foremost mental health institute, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), served as temporary NMC chairperson after Dr Suresh Chandra Sharma’s mandate ended in September 2023.

The appointments remain for four years until the appointee reaches the age of 70 or until additional orders are issued, whichever comes first.

Dr. Sanjay Behari, a neurosurgeon and head of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram, has been appointed president of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board. This body plays an important role in evaluating and maintaining the standards of medical education schools across the nation.

Dr. Anil D’Cruz, director (Oncology) of Apollo Hospital in Mumbai, has been appointed a full-time member of the Postgraduate Medical Education Board.

Dr. Rajendra Achyut Badwe, professor emeritus at Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, has been appointed as a part-time member of the undergraduate medical education board for two years, till he turns 70 or until further notice.

What is National Medical Commission?

The National Medical Commission is a statutory authority in India that oversees medical education, professions, institutes, and research. It was established on September 25, 2020, to replace the Medical Council of India.

The Commission recognises medical qualifications, accredits medical schools, registers medical practitioners, and monitors and evaluates medical practice and infrastructure in India.
