Around 27 Jharkhand workers stranded in Cameroon have asked the Centre to evacuate them from the Central African country. The workers are from Bokaro, Giridih, and Hazaribagh.
Salary not paid by company for last 4 months, say workers
In a video message, the workers alleged that a private company transported them to Cameroon on March 31. However, for the past four months, the company has not paid them salaries.
The workers stated they were running out of food and water and didn’t have enough money to recharge their phones.

Jharkhand minister requests MEA for evacuation
Bebi Devi, Minister for the Department of Women, Child Development, and Societal Security, demanded that the External Affairs Ministry secure their safe return and tagged Minister S Jaishankar.
“27 youths from Jharkhand’s Bokaro, Hazaribagh, and Giridih districts are stranded in Cameroon, South Africa. All of them worked for a private company there, but they haven’t been paid in four months,” Devi tweeted.

Sikandar Ali, a social worker and activist who focuses on migrant worker issues, has also called on the Central and State governments to adopt tangible diplomatic steps to ensure the workers’ safe return.
Many such occurrences have already been reported in Jharkhand.
Last year, a group of migrant workers stranded in Saudi Arabia asked the Jharkhand government to help them home. The workers from Bokaro, Giridih, and Hazaribagh districts stated they had been hired by a contractor for construction work. However, the contractor terminated the work and did not pay them.
In 2022, a group of workers from Jharkhand stranded in Mali were rescued after they appealed to the Indian authorities for help on social media.
