From “टक्कर मारना” listed as a voter’s name to “B COM” appearing as a father’s name, unusual entries in Uttar Pradesh’s graduate constituency electoral rolls have raised questions about data verification.

October 22, 2026: Entries reading like bizarre Hindi sentences rather than voters’ names have surfaced in the electoral rolls and voter slips for the Allahabad-Jhansi Division Graduate Constituency in Uttar Pradesh, prompting the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to order an inquiry just a day before polling.
Scial media users have flagged several such entries , questioning how phrases such as “राम ने यादव को मारा” (Ram beat Yadav) could appear as a voter’s name. They also highlighted entries in which a father’s name was recorded as “B COM”, asking whether the names could be genuine and whether the entries should be treated as potentially fake.
Journalist Ravi Raj @ravirajprayagi tagged the Uttar Pradesh CEO’s official account, pointing out that the problem appeared to extend beyond bizarre names. He also alleged that addresses were missing from several entries and that numerous voters’ addresses contained discrepancies.
He also drew attention to entries such as “टक्कर मारना” (to hit or collide) as a name and “राम ने शर्मा को मारा” (Ram beat Sharma) as a father’s name. Questioning the quality of the electoral rolls, he asked whether the Election Commission was compiling a voter list or conducting a competition in absurd sentences.
Other entries circulating from the voter slips include “इरफ़ान अली ने कहा” (Irfan Ali said), “मूर्ख काली देवी” and “राम ने यादव को मारा”, with one entry listing the father’s name as “मूर्ख चन्द्र यादव”. In another case, “रवि शर्मा” appears alongside the father’s name “राम ने शर्मा को मारा”. Some of the slips carry standard electoral details, including part and serial numbers and polling-station information.

Responding to the complaints, the official account of the Chief Electoral Officer, Uttar Pradesh, said it had received information through social media about unusual names in the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduate Constituency rolls.
“The Divisional Commissioner of Jhansi, who serves as the Electoral Registration Officer for this constituency, has been directed to investigate the matter and submit a report by afternoon,” the CEO’s office said.
The inquiry comes ahead of polling scheduled for October 23. The episode has raised questions about the process used to compile and verify the graduate constituency’s electoral rolls, although the authenticity and circumstances of the individual entries remain to be established through the official investigation.
Separately, the CEO’s office had earlier directed that minor clerical or printing errors in the rolls for graduate and teachers’ constituencies should not, by themselves, prevent eligible voters from casting their ballots on polling day. Such voters may be allowed to vote if their identities can be satisfactorily established through other details or documents.
The latest controversy has also drawn attention to separate complaints about duplicate entries in the same constituency, adding to scrutiny of the electoral rolls on the eve of polling.
