India’s all-time leading goal-scorer and ex-captain Sunil Chhetri has withdrawn his retirement decision and will play for the national team in the FIFA March international window.
India is set to compete with Maldives in a friendly match on March 19, followed by a game against Bangladesh on March 25 in the third round of qualifiers for the AFC Asian Cup 2027. The 40-year-old had initially retired from international football in June 2024.
Chhetri had chosen to end his remarkable international career, having dedicated a record 19 years to representing the national colours. He announced on May 16, 2024, that he would retire following his match against Kuwait in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced via their official X account that Chhetri was back.
Chhetri’s esteemed career has seen achieve numerous records and frequently score vital goals for India when they needed their captain to rise and guide the team. With 94 goals scored, Chhetri ranks as the 4th top goal scorer in international football, following Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Ali Daei.
Following his retirement, the 40-year-old has persisted in playing in the Indian Super League for Bengaluru FC, where he has shown exceptional performance this season.
Chhetri has netted 12 goals in the 2024-25 season and recorded 2 assists as well.
Chhetri has appeared in 23 games for Bengaluru FC this season, beginning in 17 of those. Following his retirement, Chhetri emphasized that he didn’t make the decision due to physical reasons, as he believed he was in good shape and active.
India is placed in a qualifying group for the AFC Asian Cup alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong (China), and Singapore, launching their campaign in Shillong.
