Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday accused those in power in New Delhi of undermining the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. In a message read during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at Belgavi in Karnataka, she asserted that the ideologies and institutions nurturing the current leadership were responsible for creating a “toxic atmosphere” that led to Gandhi’s assassination.
“It was he who moulded and guided all our remarkable leaders of that generation. Today, his legacy is under threat from those in power and the ideologies that nurtured them. These organisations never fought for our freedom, bitterly opposed Gandhi, and glorify his killers,” she said.

Sonia Gandhi emphasized the urgency of protecting Gandhian values, urging Congress leaders to confront these forces with determination. She referred to the meeting as the ‘Nava Satyagraha Baithak’, aligning it with Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance.
“It is our sacred duty to renew our resolve to confront these forces with all the might at our command. Let us move forward with urgency and purpose, individually and collectively,” she urged.
A Historic Reflection
Marking the centenary of the 39th session of the Indian National Congress, which was held at the same venue, Sonia Gandhi called it a “historic occasion.” Despite her absence due to travel constraints, she reflected on Mahatma Gandhi’s pivotal role as Congress president, describing it as a transformational milestone for the party and the Indian independence movement.
Renewed Commitment to Gandhian Ideals
Sonia Gandhi reaffirmed the Congress party’s commitment to Gandhian principles, describing him as a “fundamental source of inspiration.” She urged leaders to strengthen the party’s organization and resilience to meet contemporary challenges.
“Today, we rededicate ourselves to preserving, protecting, and promoting the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Our great organization, with its glorious history, has repeatedly demonstrated its resilience, and we will continue to do so,” she concluded.
