Seoul, June 23, 2025:
Samsung is set to reintroduce its mid-cycle software update strategy with the development of One UI 8.5, a major upgrade based on Android 16. Expected to launch in early 2026 alongside the Galaxy S26 series, One UI 8.5 promises performance improvements, enhanced Galaxy AI features, and deeper customization options for Samsung users.
Return of the “.5” Update Strategy:
After a gap since One UI 2.5, Samsung is bringing back its “.5” software model. One UI 8.5 is being developed as a substantial update to One UI 8.0, and will first appear on the upcoming Galaxy S26 series. The move signals Samsung’s return to robust mid-year refreshes, which many users had been hoping for.
Built on Android 16, Launch in Early 2026:
One UI 8.5 will run atop Android 16 and is expected to be officially introduced with the Galaxy S26 lineup in early 2026. While its first appearance will be exclusive to the S26, several current-generation flagships—including the Galaxy S24, S23, Z Fold5/6, and high-end tablets—are expected to receive the update later in the year.
Enhanced Galaxy AI Integration:
The update is rumored to expand Galaxy AI capabilities, focusing on features such as real-time voice translation, AI-powered text summarization, image editing, and smart note-taking. These additions are expected to complement the AI features already introduced in One UI 8.0 and further enrich Samsung’s user ecosystem.

Focus on Multitasking and Customization:
Insiders suggest that One UI 8.5 will improve multitasking tools, possibly refining Samsung DeX, Multi-Window support, and task continuity between phone, tablet, and Galaxy Book. Users can also expect more dynamic customization features, including enhanced themes, widgets, and lock screen controls.
What One UI 8.0 Brought And What 8.5 May Build On:
One UI 8.0 introduced Auracast QR code sharing, HDR screenshots, Bedtime Guidance for Galaxy Watch users, and improved emergency alert systems. One UI 8.5 is likely to polish these features and introduce others initially delayed during the 8.0 cycle.
Eligible Devices for One UI 8.5:
While the Galaxy S26 series will launch with One UI 8.5, the update is expected to roll out gradually to:
-
Galaxy S24, S23 series
-
Galaxy Z Fold 5/6, Flip 5/6
-
Galaxy Tab S9 series
-
Galaxy A-series (select high-end models)
Samsung’s commitment to four years of software support ensures a wide rollout, although exact timelines may vary by region.
One UI 8.5 marks a return to Samsung’s tradition of impactful mid-cycle updates, combining stability with innovation. With its focus on AI, multitasking, and seamless user experience, the update is expected to serve as a bridge between Android 16’s capabilities and Samsung’s own software vision for the next generation of Galaxy devices.
