The unfair treatment by the West regarding Kashmir at the UN was emphasized during The Raisina Dialogue, an annual global multilateral conference in New Delhi. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed how the United Nations had failed in its comprehension and handling of the matter.
Jaishankar highlighted that India has faced the “longest-lasting” illegal occupation of a territory in the world post-World War II – in Kashmir. The whole region of Jammu and Kashmir, which encompasses Gilgit and Baltistan, known as Northern Areas prior to 1970, joined India in 1947. Pakistan, through a unilateral act of aggression, intruded into Jammu and Kashmir and has unlawfully occupied portions of the Indian Union ever since.
While discussing Kashmir at the forum today, Jaishankar emphasized the selective implementation and interpretation of international regulations regarding matters of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

While expressing worries about past injustices related to specific matters, he advocated for the creation of a “reformed, robust, and equitable” United Nations. Describing the UN’s significant mistake in failing to denounce Pakistan’s unlawful occupation of sections of Jammu and Kashmir, Jaishankar stated that both the “attacker” (Pakistan) and the “victim” (India) were treated as equals.
“We all speak of sovereignty and territorial integrity. All of us agree that it is a vital principle. It’s the bedrock of global rules. After the Second World War, the longest standing illegal, I would say presence, occupation of a territory by another country pertains to India, what we saw in Kashmir,” he said.
Supporting a reformed and robust UN, Jaishankar stated that global standards and regulations should be enforced consistently. “We require a robust UN, but a robust UN necessitates a just UN,” he stated.
