Ranveer Allahbadia sought the Supreme Court on Friday to challenge various FIRs lodged against him for making an obscene joke on the reality show ‘India’s Got Latent,’ which triggered a tremendous outcry.
Adv Abhinav Chandrachud sought urgent hearing of the matter
Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, representing Ranveer Allahbadia, requested that the case be heard as soon as possible. The Chief Justice of India (CJI), Sanjiv Khanna, declined to hear the issue urgently, saying it would be handled according to protocol.
The CJI said “oral mentioning of the case is not permitted,” while declining to hear the matter.
The Mumbai Police and the Assam Police filed FIRs against Allahbadia. The Assam Police filed a FIR against Ranveer Allahbadia and four other influencers for allegedly “promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussion” on an episode of ‘India’s Got Latent’.
Following the FIR, the Assam Police went Mumbai to question persons implicated in the case.
On February 10, the Guwahati Crime Branch lodged the case based on a complaint filed by Guwahati resident Alok Boruah against many YouTubers and influencers, including Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Apoorva Makhija, Ranveer Allahbadia, and Samay Raina.
Based on this complaint, the Guwahati Crime Branch filed a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, the IT Act of 2000, the Cinematograph Act of 1952, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act of 1986.
