Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday issued a direct warning to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying they too would face legal action over alleged electoral manipulation after Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Addressing the INDIA bloc’s Vote Chori rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, the Congress leader said the opposition would pursue those allegedly responsible for manipulating elections. He asserted that Gyanesh Kumar would first be removed from office and jailed, after which Modi and Shah would face legal proceedings.
Responding to Shah’s reported assertion that Modi was not going anywhere, Gandhi said the Prime Minister would not be allowed to escape accountability.
“Amit Shah ji said Narendra Modi is not going anywhere. I am telling you the opposite: Narendra Modi cannot go anywhere. Even if he wants to leave, we will not let him go. After Gyanesh Kumar, we are going to stand right in front of you. Legal action will be taken against them,” Gandhi said.
Rahul Gandhi accused the Election Commission of facilitating large-scale electoral manipulation, alleging that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were compromised through EVMs and changes to voter lists. Addressing the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, he described the alleged rigging as an assault on the democratic rights of the entire country.
“This is not an ordinary theft. It is the theft of every Indian’s voice. This is treason,” Rahul said.
Targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Rahul Gandhi claimed that Narendra Modi would not have become Prime Minister and Amit Shah would not have taken over as Home Minister without his alleged involvement. He questioned the legitimacy of the 2024 general election, asserting that the outcome had been shaped by electoral malpractice.
Rahul alleged that votes were manipulated through EVMs and voter-list tampering. He claimed that 15 per cent of voters had been deleted from electoral rolls after the 2024 polls, while the vote-share difference between the INDIA bloc and the BJP-led NDA was only three percentage points. He maintained that figures released by the Election Commission itself backed his allegations.
Recalling his warnings about the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21, Gandhi asked the gathering whether his predictions had not proved correct.
He then issued a direct warning to the Chief Election Commissioner, declaring that Gyanesh Kumar would be removed from office and sent to prison. “I am telling every citizen and every youth of India: Gyanesh Kumar will be removed from the post of Chief Election Commissioner. Gyanesh Kumar will go to jail,” he said.
Gandhi also accused the RSS of seeking to dominate the country’s institutional framework, alleging that its influence had spread across sectors ranging from education to investigative agencies.

Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of manipulating electoral outcomes in several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Karnataka, besides the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“For years, vote theft has been happening in this country. Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections — in all these elections, vote theft has occurred. Votes have been stolen through EVMs and by deleting and adding names to voter lists,” Rahul alleged.
He claimed that these alleged electoral irregularities had helped Modi become Prime Minister and Shah assume the Home Ministry. Rahul Gandhi described the removal of Gyanesh Kumar as the first step towards what he called the restoration of democracy and the Constitution.
“We do not want a country that belongs only to two or three people,” he said, alleging that farmers, students and workers were being denied their rightful opportunities and benefits.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also accused the BJP of forming governments through manipulated electoral mandates. He said removing Modi from power was necessary to protect democracy and the Constitution.
The rally was part of the INDIA bloc’s nationwide political campaign against alleged voter-list manipulation and electoral irregularities. Opposition parties have demanded accountability from the Election Commission and greater transparency in the revision of electoral rolls.
