Amid the concerns over injuries to key players in the Punjab Kings camp, head coach Ricky Ponting has revealed the reason behind the inability to get proper injury replacements within the side.
Glen Maxwell fractured his finger while training, becoming the second PBKS player to be sidelined after New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson sustained a season-ending injury at the tournament’s outset.
Iyer not bothered about injuries in the camp
PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer, on Wednesday, disclosed that they have not yet made a decision regarding replacements for Ferguson and Maxwell.
“To be honest, we haven’t decided about the replacements yet so far but we are pretty strong in our team’s mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We’ve got varieties of players who can win you matches. So we’re going to stick to that as much as possible,” Iyer said, during the toss for PBKS’s match against CSK.
Ponting reveals how PSL has affected injury replacement
However, Ponting stated that at some point of the tournament they will have to sign some replacements. Ponting, nonetheless, blamed the shortage of quality alternatives for replacements to the current Pakistan Super League (PSL).
“So we’ve actually been a little bit patient. Maxi’s only been a couple of days, Lockie’s has been two or three weeks. And with the PSL happening at the same time, there’s not a lot of high-quality replacements out there, to be honest. So we’ve just been patient,” Ponting said.
Ponting mentioned that they are searching for young Indian cricketers who might serve as Maxwell’s replacement.
