:In a proud moment for Nagaland, veteran fruit farmer L. Hangthing has been conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for his outstanding contributions to agriculture. The recognition, announced on the eve of the 76th Republic Day, honors his decades-long dedication to cultivating non-native fruits in Nagaland’s Noklak district, setting new benchmarks in the field of horticulture.

A Farmer’s Passion Turned Legacy

L. Hangthing, a name synonymous with agricultural innovation in Nagaland, has spent more than 30 years perfecting the cultivation of exotic and non-native fruits in the challenging terrain of the northeastern state. His farm, a hub of horticultural excellence, showcases a variety of fruits such as apples, kiwis, and dragon fruit, all grown in a region traditionally not suited for such crops. Through sheer perseverance and deep knowledge of soil adaptability, Hangthing has transformed his land into a model of sustainable agriculture.

Revolutionizing Farming in Nagaland

Nagaland’s hilly landscape and unpredictable climate make large-scale farming a challenge. However, L. Hangthing has consistently defied these odds. By integrating modern farming techniques with traditional wisdom, he has significantly boosted fruit cultivation in the region. His success has prompted the state’s agricultural bodies to take a keen interest in his methods, leading to government-backed initiatives promoting fruit farming as a viable source of income for local farmers.

Beyond his own farm, Hangthing has been instrumental in mentoring young farmers and training agricultural enthusiasts, fostering a new generation of agripreneurs in Nagaland. His knowledge-sharing initiatives have contributed to the state’s growing reputation as an emerging fruit production hub.

Recognition and Impact

The Padma Shri award recognizes not only his personal achievements but also his role in elevating Nagaland’s agricultural potential. His contributions align with India’s broader goals of sustainable farming and rural empowerment. By demonstrating that innovation and perseverance can overcome geographical limitations, Hangthing has shown that self-sufficiency in food production is within reach for remote tribal communities.

Upon receiving the award, Hangthing expressed his gratitude, stating, “This honor is not just for me but for all the farmers of Nagaland who work tirelessly despite many challenges. Agriculture is the backbone of our land, and I hope this recognition inspires more people to take up farming with passion and dedication.”

A Role Model for Future Generations

As India strides towards strengthening its agricultural sector, L. Hangthing’s journey stands as a beacon of resilience, innovation, and sustainability. His work exemplifies how small-scale farmers can make a significant impact through dedication and knowledge, ensuring food security while also generating economic opportunities.

Nagaland celebrates this remarkable achievement, and as Hangthing continues his work, his legacy will undoubtedly inspire many more to pursue excellence in agriculture. His Padma Shri award is a testament to the power of grassroots innovation and the transformative potential of farming in India’s northeastern states.
