“One of the Greatest Bluffs Ever”: Alastair Cook Questions India’s Jasprit Bumrah Strategy!

Birmingham, June 27, 2025:

Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook has stirred up fresh debate in the ongoing India-England Test series with a bold claim about India’s decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for parts of the five-match series. Referring to it as possibly “one of the greatest bluffs ever,” Cook questioned whether the Indian management is truly committed to limiting their premier fast bowler’s appearances.

The Controversy:

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed earlier this week that Bumrah was always scheduled to play only three of the five Tests in the series due to workload management. However, with India trailing 0–1 after the Leeds Test and Bumrah in red-hot form including a five-wicket haul the decision to possibly rest him for the upcoming Edgbaston Test has raised eyebrows.

“Unless this is one of the greatest bluffs in modern cricket, I just can’t see how you rest Bumrah when the series is on the line,” said Cook during a discussion on BBC’s Test Match Special. “You’d want him leading the attack at Lord’s and Edgbaston — it’s a risk to play without him.”

Team India has stood by its decision, stating that Bumrah’s intense workload at Headingley where he bowled nearly 44 overs prompted the scheduled rest to ensure he remains available for the later, more decisive matches of the series.

Coach Gautam Gambhir stressed that protecting Bumrah’s long-term fitness was a key factor:

“We had decided well before the tour started that Bumrah would play only three Tests. It’s about managing his body, not just winning the next game,” Gambhir told reporters.

Bluff or Strategy?

Cook’s remarks have sparked speculation that India could be deliberately misleading England as a psychological tactic a common ploy in high-stakes Test series.

While some experts believe India is genuinely preserving Bumrah’s fitness, others, like Michael Vaughan, argue the early disclosure of such plans is unwise and gives England a strategic advantage.

“If you have plans like this, why announce them publicly?” Vaughan had said earlier. “Keep England guessing.”

What’s at Stake:

  • India trails 0–1 in the five-match series

  • The second Test begins July 2 at Edgbaston

  • Bumrah’s absence would significantly weaken India’s pace attack, with Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, or Akash Deep likely to step in

With the next match around the corner, all eyes are on whether India will stick to their stated rotation plan or spring a surprise by naming Bumrah in the XI a move that could indeed turn Cook’s “greatest bluff” theory into reality.

Sir Alastair Cook’s explosive comments have added fuel to an already fiery series. Whether India is bluffing, protecting Bumrah, or playing the long game the strategy could define the course of the remaining Tests.
