IRGC Intelligence Chief Major Khademi, a key figure in Iran’s counterintelligence operations, had played a central role in protecting the regime from foreign espionage and internal threats.

Tehran, April 6, 2026: Major General Majid Khademi, head of the intelligence arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in a pre-dawn strike attributed to the United States and Israel, Iranian state media confirmed on Monday.

In an official statement, the IRGC described the killing as a “criminal terrorist attack by the American-Zionist enemy” and declared Khademi a “martyr.” No immediate details were released regarding the exact location or method of the strike.

High-value target in escalating conflict

Khademi’s death marks one of the most significant targeted killings in the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The strike is part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling Iran’s military leadership and intelligence infrastructure.

He had taken over as head of the IRGC’s intelligence organisation in 2025 following the killing of his predecessor in earlier Israeli strikes. His death makes him the second chief of the powerful intelligence wing to be eliminated within a year.

Key figure in Iran’s counterintelligence

Khademi was considered a key architect of Iran’s internal security and counterintelligence operations. Prior to leading the IRGC intelligence wing, he headed the Information Protection Organisation under Iran’s defence establishment, focusing on counter-espionage and safeguarding sensitive military assets.

Known for maintaining a low public profile, he was regarded as a highly educated strategist with expertise in national security and intelligence operations.

Wider regional tensions

The assassination comes amid intensifying military exchanges across the region. On the same day, Iranian forces reportedly carried out a drone strike targeting a telecommunications facility in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, though no casualties were reported.

The incident underscores the widening scope of the conflict, with Gulf infrastructure increasingly coming into the crosshairs.

Escalation risks grow

The United States and Israel have said their operations are aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities, disrupting its nuclear programme, and limiting its support for regional proxies. Tehran, however, has accused both countries of targeting civilian and strategic infrastructure and has vowed retaliation.

Analysts warn that continued strikes on senior Iranian officials could further destabilize the region, increasing the risk of broader confrontation involving Gulf states and key global energy routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

With tensions at a peak, further retaliatory actions are expected. Details about the strike and official responses from Washington and Tel Aviv are awaited as the situation continues to evolve.
