February 6, 2026: In a chilling act of brazen violence caught on CCTV, a masked gunman calmly walked up to the car of Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Lucky Oberoi and shot him dead in broad daylight outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar on Friday, triggering political outrage and renewed concerns over the state’s deteriorating law-and-order situation.
Footage from the scene shows the attacker, dressed in a black hoodie and face mask, approaching Oberoi’s Mahindra Thar Roxx before firing five shots at close range. The shooter then fled, with police suspecting that at least one accomplice was waiting nearby on a two-wheeler to facilitate the escape.
Oberoi, 38, a Jalandhar-based AAP leader, had arrived at the gurdwara in Model Town earlier in the morning. He was seated in his vehicle and was about to drive away when the assailant struck. Window panes of his car were shattered in the firing, and the glass of another parked vehicle was also damaged.
Gravely wounded, Oberoi was rushed to a nearby hospital in an unconscious state, but doctors were unable to save him. ACP Jalandhar Parminder Singh confirmed that Oberoi had sustained critical injuries and succumbed shortly after admission.

Soon after the incident, heavy police deployment cordoned off the area, and forensic teams were called in to collect evidence. Multiple police teams have launched a manhunt, scanning CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify and track down the attackers.
Preliminary investigations suggest the gunman did not act alone. Police believe an accomplice was positioned nearby on a two-wheeler, helping the assailant flee the scene immediately after the shooting.

The daylight killing sparked sharp political reactions, with opposition parties accusing the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government of failing to ensure public safety.
Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said the murder of a ruling party leader in such a public manner exposed a “complete breakdown of law and order” in Punjab.

“The shocking daylight murder of @AAPPunjab leader Lucky Oberoi outside a gurdwara in Jalandhar exposes the grim reality: if even ruling party leaders aren’t safe, what hope remains for ordinary citizens?” Bajwa said in a post on X.
He alleged that Punjab was gripped by fear, gang violence, and administrative paralysis, accusing the state government of prioritising publicity over governance. Bajwa said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann must explain who was responsible for what he termed a collapse of public safety.
Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal also launched a blistering attack on the Mann government, claiming Punjab was “bleeding” under what he described as AAP’s “zero-fear governance”.
Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring echoed the criticism, saying the state had descended into “jungle raj” under AAP rule and that no one felt safe anymore.
Meanwhile, police said investigations were progressing rapidly, with teams tracking leads and analysing CCTV footage to establish the motive and identify all those involved.
Security has been tightened across Jalandhar and adjoining districts, and authorities have assured swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
