Stavanger, Norway – May 30, 2025:
Round 4 of the Norway Chess 2025 tournament delivered high drama and world-class chess, as Indian prodigy D. Gukesh stunned Fabiano Caruana in a tense Armageddon finish, while Magnus Carlsen scored a clinical classical win against Arjun Erigaisi.

Gukesh Celebrates 19th Birthday with Stunning Win

On his 19th birthday, Grandmaster D. Gukesh gave himself and his fans a perfect gift by defeating world no. 2 Fabiano Caruana. The classical game ended in a solid draw, but Gukesh showed nerves of steel in the Armageddon decider, using accurate calculations and swift play under time pressure to secure the win and earn 1.5 crucial points.

“Beating Caruana on my birthday, especially in such a format, feels incredibly special,” Gukesh said after the match. “I just stayed calm and trusted my instincts in the tiebreak.”

This win marks a significant step forward for Gukesh, who continues to grow in confidence and stature on the global stage.

Carlsen Outclasses Erigaisi in Classical Duel

Former World Champion Magnus Carlsen showed why he remains one of the greatest in the game, dispatching India’s Arjun Erigaisi in a classical encounter. The game appeared balanced for much of the middlegame, but a slight inaccuracy by Erigaisi allowed Carlsen to transition into a favorable endgame, which he converted with trademark precision.

“Carlsen just doesn’t give you a second chance once you slip,” said Erigaisi. “I knew the position was delicate, but one small mistake made the difference.”

With the full three points from this win, Carlsen solidified his place at the top of the leaderboard.

Current Standings and Tournament Format

After four rounds, Carlsen leads the standings, with Gukesh and Caruana closely trailing. The Norway Chess tournament follows a unique format: players score 3 points for a classical win, 1.5 for an Armageddon win, and 1 point for an Armageddon loss after a classical draw.

The six-player double round-robin event features some of the world’s finest players, including Carlsen, Caruana, Gukesh, Erigaisi, Hikaru Nakamura, and Wei Yi.

The players will enjoy a rest day on Friday before returning to the board on Saturday for Round 5. With the tournament heating up, every game is proving decisive in the fight for the top spot.

As the action continues, all eyes will be on Gukesh to see whether the birthday win sparks a deeper run  and whether Carlsen can continue his dominant form on home turf.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
