India is on track to introduce its inaugural bullet train, slated to commence operations in June-July 2026 in Gujarat. The country is set to finalize a deal with Japan to procure the first six Shinkansen trains by the end of this month.
Additionally, all contracts for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor project, including those for procuring trains and operating systems, will be awarded by August 15 this year.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Construction Status and State Progress
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) shared an update indicating significant progress in the project, with 100 km of viaducts and 230 km of pier work already completed for the corridor. Notably, 100 km of viaducts were constructed by launching 40-meter-long ‘full span box girders’ and ‘segmental girders.’
With construction underway, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project aims to connect the two cities. As of January 2024, the project’s overall physical progress is approximately 40%, with Gujarat leading at 48.3% and Maharashtra at 22.5%. Noteworthy efforts in Maharashtra have been directed towards expediting land handover to meet project deadlines.

Despite progress, challenges persist in land acquisition and environmental clearances. However, the railway ministry remains optimistic about overcoming these hurdles to ensure the project’s timely completion. Efforts in Maharashtra to accelerate land handover underscore the commitment to meeting project deadlines.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: Services and Route Development
The 508-km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will feature ‘limited-stop’ and ‘all-stop’ services. Limited-stop services will complete the journey in two hours, while all-stop services will take another forty-five minutes. Over the past year, significant developments include the completion of over 100 km of viaducts and the construction of six river bridges, with seven of the twenty bridges in Gujarat already built.
With substantial progress achieved, India’s first bullet train project signifies a significant leap towards modernizing the country’s transportation infrastructure and enhancing connectivity between major cities.
