December 28, 2025 — Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has strongly condemned a series of incidents involving vandalism and disruptions during Christmas celebrations across several parts of India, calling them a violation of the country’s constitutional values.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Lalduhoma said he was “distressed” by reports of attacks and harassment linked to Christmas festivities. “Such incidents are contrary to the constitutional values of fraternity, secularism, and freedom of religion,” he wrote. Emphasising the spirit of the season, the Chief Minister added, “The central message of Christmas is peace on earth—a reminder for all of us to live with understanding, tolerance, and goodwill.”
The statement from the Chief Minister of the Christian-majority state—where over 87 per cent of the population follows Christianity—comes amid growing concern over multiple reported incidents in the days leading up to and during Christmas 2025.
According to reports, Christmas decorations were vandalised at schools and commercial establishments in states including Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. Carol-singing groups were reportedly disrupted in parts of Kerala, while incidents of harassment were reported during church events in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Among the notable cases were the vandalism of St. Mary’s School in Assam’s Nalbari district, which led to arrests; damage to Christmas displays at a shopping mall in Raipur, Chhattisgarh; and the alleged assault of a visually impaired woman during a church programme in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Prayer services and community carol gatherings were also disrupted at multiple locations, according to church groups and local media.
The incidents have drawn sharp reactions from political leaders and religious bodies. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor described the festive season as one of “unprecedented anxiety” for the Christian community, warning that attacks on any single community undermine the constitutional right of all Indians to worship freely.\

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) expressed “deep anguish” over the developments, urging authorities to ensure the safety of minority communities and take firm action against those promoting hatred and intolerance.
Within Mizoram, Home Minister K. Sapdanga and state Congress president Lal Thanzara also condemned the incidents, accusing fringe elements of attempting to erode India’s secular fabric.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Christmas service in Delhi and reiterated the message of unity and harmony, the reported ground-level incidents have once again reignited debates over religious tolerance, minority rights, and the enforcement of constitutional protections.
In contrast, Christmas celebrations in Mizoram concluded peacefully, marked by community feasts, prayer services, and public festivities. Lalduhoma’s message, observers note, serves as a broader call for national introspection at a time traditionally associated with peace, compassion, and goodwill.
